Illegal Gambling Clubs of Toledo

Terry Shaffer’s new book, Illegal Gambling Clubs of Toledo, is just terrific. It’s one of only a few books on illegal casinos and is uniquely comprehensive, making it a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts.

Terry, a Toledo resident, obtained rare files and photos from the clubs’ era, many of which have never been published before, adding unique historical value.

The book coincides with the recent opening of Ohio’s first legalized casinos, and collectors of casino memorabilia will be happy to see many Toledo chips and dice conclusively identified. It’s like you’re going back to the days of Moe Dalitz, before he moved to Vegas and opened the Desert Inn.

The book includes 72 illegal gambling operations with photos, addresses, and dates of operation. It’s 150 pages (8 x 11 softbound), with a bibliography and full index, and will give enthusiasts confidence and enjoyment in exploring this unique history.

  1. Adding one in Hammond and relocating the Gary casino would also strengthen the gambling industry in the region in case Illinois changes its gambling laws, McDermott said. If the changes happen, casinos will appear nearby in Illinois and pull revenues from Northwest Indiana.
